Raider Wins PowerBar Cup
OK, so that isn’t new news. In fact, it might bore some as Raider (Miami, FL) is now four-time defending
champions. What isn’t boring is how they did it. Raider won four PowerBar Cup championships without a single loss.
Their accomplishment is made more impressive by the quality and quantity of competitive teams at the event each year.
“The Raider program plays a key role in the PowerBar Cup tradition” explains tournament director and Dynamo player
Stuart Sheldon. “In just five years the PowerBar Cup is one of the most respected events in the Southeast in no
small part to the quality of Raider play and players.” As most valuable player of the 2002 PowerBar Cup, Raider
player Cicio Morales (#10, utility) only adds to the Raider legend.
Host club Dynamo finished second for the second straight year and third time in five years. Dynamo wants to win
their own tournament but they have a larger goal in mind. “We want the tournament as competitive as possible,” says
Dynamo coach/player John Testa, “so it helps our club and the sport at the same time. It is easy to invite only
teams you know you can beat, but what do you gain? What does the sport gain?”
To see what Testa means, look to the championship game between Raider and Dynamo. The clubs squared off for the
inaugural PowerBar Cup championship in 1998 and Raider controlled play from start to finish. This year, except for
an abysmal stretch where Raider scored eight straight goals, Dynamo kept the scoring balanced. “We made fundamental
mistakes on defense in the second quarter” explained Testa “and we paid the price. When we played quality defense we
were in the game.”
With their fourth undefeated PowerBar weekend, Raider’s PowerBar Cup record runs to 28-0. And, once again, they
drove south with a trunk full of plunder from event sponsor PowerBar. Raider’s Cicio Morales MVP selection made the
treasure trove even richer.
